Update on Be Well Do Well Mini-Grants
In June 2020 when BeWellPBC launched its first Be Well Do Well mini-grants to put small grants in the hands of people with a passion to improve behavioral health and wellness, we hoped that the funds would also serve as a catalyst for long-term positive change in individuals, communities, and workplaces. Two of our recipients, Rhonda Rogers CEO and president of Lake Worth West Resident Planning Group/BRIDGES at Lake Worth West and Kenyon Link, director of BRIDGES at Riviera Beach, shared how our funding helped plant the seeds for growth and progress.
Women Helping Women
Be Well Do Well funding awarded to the Lake Worth West Resident Planning Group/BRIDGES at Lake Worth West has enabled 25 under-served Hispanic/Latina women to help each other overcome stress, anxiety, and depression. The new program called “Women Helping Women” is a holistic approach that brings together a variety of activities together under one umbrella to support mental health and wellness, including Zumba, yoga, cooking, group sessions to build peer support, and connections to treatment and resources. Program participant Johanna shared she “feels recharged with energy. You forget about your problems and your stress.”
By opening up and encouraging each other through their activities, Rhonda has watched the women build their confidence to the point that many are now offering to lead sessions and share their own special interests, such as cooking or tips on relieving stress. “Many women come into the program feeling alone and frustrated,” said Rhonda. It’s a relief for them to communicate and build relationships with other women. We have seen so much growth in the participants.” A new funder has seen the impressive growth in the women as well and has provided funding to continue the program for a second year! It’s an example of how one idea with a small amount of resources can “Do Well,” helping residents, organizations and communities “Be Well.”
